“This was a seminal collection in the work of Kawakubo wherein she challenged the notion of fashionable dress and the perfect, aspirational catwalk body, the collection came to be known as the ‘Lumps and Bumps’ collection.” - V&A Museum
“I realised that the clothes could be the body and the body could be the clothes…This was an idea for possible new clothes. I then started to design the body. I didn’t expect them to be easy garments to be worn every day, but Comme des Garçons clothes should always be new to the world and inspiring.” Rei Kawakubo
The show went on to inspire Merce Cunningham to use garments from this collection for his show, “Scenario,” which premiered at the Brooklyn Academy later that year.
