ROBERT MAXWELL
Unique 'Sunburst' wall sculpture, 2004
Unglazed stoneware, lacquered metal. Studio-made, Ramona Convent Secondary School, Alhambra, CA.
Incised "Robert Maxwell 2004".

26.5" H x 38" W

Provenance: The Estate of Robert Maxwell

The ‘Sunburst’ pattern, a recurring motif in Maxwell’s work over the course of five decades, is represented here in one of his later works: a rare wall sculpture. Here, a large slab of clay was flattened using a rolling pin, and then incised with the pattern and fired in individual pieces prior to being mounted in its frame. It recalls one earlier work from the 1960s of similar pattern, the only two ‘Sunburst’ wall works known to exist.
