At the core of Ben LaMacchia's (b. 1999) design practice is a commitment to material inquiry. The interaction and tension between chosen media serve as the primary narrative of his work. Though LaMacchia operates first and foremost as an artist and designer, his pieces are underpinned by a deep fluency in foundational techniques. This technical approach provides the scaffolding necessary to deliberately break the rules, resulting in objects that feel distinctly contemporary and deeply personal.

Translating the pliable logic of basketry and textiles into custom-molded maple plywood, 'Woven Chair' presents a compelling contrast; structural rigidity cloaked in a fluid visual identity. Expanding upon the lineage of Frank Gehry's woven furniture, this piece scales up the weave significantly, employing a unique molding technique to seamlessly interlock large-scale wooden elements.
